Bio
I started playing golf at age 12 when my family moved to Berwick and we lived next to Magdalene Fields Golf Club. After school I would get home, get changed and grab my clubs to get straight onto the course.
Even from the start I was fascinated in how to swing the club and play different shots. My collection of golf instruction books by great coaches and top players started and is still increasing today.
As a youngster I loved competitive golf, especially inter club matches for the Junior and Senior Teams. This also allowed me to experience playing other courses and make new friends. At age 16 I was beaten in The Club Championship by one shot, this pushed me to practice with more focus and purpose.
After University, I joined Eyemouth Golf Club and won The Club Championship. A different style of golf course which encouraged me to learn new shots and strategies. The next few years I worked in an office and lived in Newcastle City Centre, I didn’t get to play as much as I wanted.
I then started work at Goswick Golf Club with the intention to turn Professional. I won The Club Championship there in 2003 and turned Professional a month later. I was fortunate to have the support and encouragement that allowed me to focus on coaching and attend coaching development days by The PGA. I also started to coach at other local golf courses, this gave me experience of coaching many different golfers with varying goals and abilities, including Junior County Academy, Coaching Golfers with Special Needs, Get into Golf and Ladies Coaching.
Among the many coach education courses I’ve learned from, I find The Titleist Performance Institute assessment system invaluable in determining a golfers movement ability, stability and balance and how it influences their golf technique, as well as aiding how best to coach the player as an individual.
I’ve spent years coaching at numerous venues in the North East of England and South East Scotland. I am now coaching at Eyemouth Golf Club as well as Magdalene Fields Golf Club and Goswick Golf Club.
